THE RUTLES GODALMING 10/5/2018

THE RUTLES WILFRID NOYCE CENTRE GODALMING 19/5.2018

Ok so I wasn't expecting too much from this gig, yes ive seen the film, got the jokes but wondered how this would pan out live.  All I can say it that I along with a hall full, half of whom seemed to be big fans wearing t shirts and singing along had a very entertaining night.

From the start when Neil Innes introduced I must be in love as this is where it all began, I watched a band on full tilt . The Rutles are a kind of idea you would think up in a pub after a long night and in that moment would seem the greatest idea on earth, but in the morning light the reality of coming up with more than one great song and stretching it out over 40 years could be hard going. Not it seems for Neil Innes the whole set was made up of great songs and although there was no mistaking where or what the songs may have originally been there is enough in them to carry the joke along and not only that turn what could be just a parody band into a band in their own right.

All five members of this band had a role playing and singing making it feel like a real band rather than 3 guys backing up two old original members going out for one last hurrah. the song just keep coming shahgri-la , another day, piggy in the middle, ouch, number one , love life, good times roll. They were even selling a new album only available on the tour called the wheat album.

one of the many highlight of the night was a beautiful version of all things must pass with the crowd singing along. then rocking out with goose step mama and get up and go. this joke is far from warn out and still has legs and is running, which is more than you can say for most comedy from that era which although was great then would seem very old today the Rutles are still fresh and exciting , I for one want to see them again.

At this gig they were selling a tour only cd called the Wheat Album for £10.00 , they had enough for anyone who wanted one at the time.
